Our house for 21 people in 10 bedrooms next to the River Tyne in Northumberland is pretty special.
But today I want to talk about one of my favourite places nearby:
Step out for a walk through Whittle Dene in nearby Ovingham and it quickly feels like you’ve found somewhere quietly special.
The path winds through ancient woodland that’s barely changed in centuries, following the gentle line of the Whittle Burn as it cuts through the valley.
You’ll pass over small bridges, through open clearings, and along stretches where the trees close in and everything goes still.
There’s always something to notice.
Birdsong overhead.
Wildflowers lining the paths in warmer months.
Follow the line of the burn, occasionally opening up into wide, calm water.
If you’ve got a dog, it’s one of those walks they instinctively love – streams to sniff, space to roam, and just enough twists and turns to keep it interesting.
And if you don’t, it’s the kind of place where you naturally slow down.
A proper wander.
No rush.
Just fresh air, quiet surroundings, and that feeling of being a long way from everything – even though you’re only a short walk from the house.
It’s one of those simple, easy highlights that ends up being a favourite part of the stay.
And if you are lucky (and quiet) you may even spy a few deer in the distance.

And when you have worked up an appetite, call in to The White Swan or The Bridge End. A well-earned pint awaits – with fantastic food too.
